Heart disease

Cardiovascular disease, particularly heart attacks and strokes, is the most common cause of death in the western world. In Sweden more than 26 000 patients are hospitalized every year because of a heart attack, which is almost always caused by arteriosclerosis. The changes in the vessels play a central role also in the origin of stroke and angina pectoris. Through the vessels the body supplies the tissues with oxygen and nourishment. Arteriosclerosis makes the vessels narrow and decreases the blood flow, which means that less oxygen and nourishment comes to the affected tissues. Chest pain is a common symptom of arteriosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis also leads to increased risk of thrombosis.

High blood pressure, tobacco smoking, overweight, diabetes mellitus, too little exercise, glucose intolerance and negative psychosocial factors are all risk factors which are related to arteriosclerosis. But all of them can be easily changed. Overwhelming evidence shows that nutritional factors play a crucial role in the appearance of arteriosclerosis itself and the above mentioned risk factors. There are many hypotheses about the cause of arteriosclerosis, but inflammation in the walls of the arteries is probably one of the most important factors.

Orthodox treatment of cardiovascular disease

The use of drugs in cardiovascular disease is huge. Diuretics are a group of common pharmaceuticals for lowering blood pressure. They elevate the rate of urination, which often causes electrolyte loss.

Common side effects are alterations in the electrolytes that can lead to apathy, cramps, loss of appetite, sleepiness, vomiting, confusion, muscle weakness and change of the heart rhythm. ACE-blockers are also used against high blood pressure and can give side effects as dizziness, nausea, headaches, digestive problems, skin rash and kidney failure. Statins are used to lower the blood lipids, but they can cause muscle weakness, nightmares, sleeping disorders, digestive problems, inflammations of the arteries (!) and damages to the liver. Beta- blockers which are used against high blood pressure can also give such symptoms as nausea, constipation, diarrhea, sleeping disorders, headaches and impotence.

To decrease the risks of heart attacks and strokes, anticoagulants are used. They block the trombocytes to prevent clots, but in some patients they cause headaches, dizziness, digestive problems and bleedings.
Surgery is more and more common and includes coronary angioplasty and bypass surgery.

Lifestyle change

What can be done then, without all these side effects? Fortunately, changing the lifestyle is a very effective way to protect ones heart and should always be the first step in the treatment of arteriosclerosis. Giving up smoking is considered to be the most important factor. The positive effects of moderate and regular exercise are even bigger than those from the drugs mentioned above. The choice of exercise is less important than the intensity and regularity. The risk of developing cardiovascular disease is also lower when you reduce stress. Eating well-balanced and nourishing food and weight reduction, if overweight, should also be given high priority. The knowledge, inspiration and motivation to do these changes are important ingredients in Santa Monica´s treatment protocol.
